Can't wait for the world to come to you to read your latest posting?

A handy mechanism called XML-RPC "Ping" allows you to be notified the moment you publish an update, the service will immediately refresh your burned feed to reflect new content. Fortunately, you need not be a programmer to benefit from pinging's instant updates, anyone can ping just by using Ping-o-Matic.

Choosing Keywords

The keywords you choose for your website has a large impact on how your site will perform in search engines. This article outlines some strategies to help you choose your keywords, where to place them in your site, and a few things you should avoid.

The Inner Workings of Robots, Spiders, and Web Crawlers

Robots, a.k.a. spiders or Web crawlers are used to feed data to a user, such as Google. Most robots are useful, but some, such as EmailSiphon and Cherry Picker are spambots. Here, you'll learn what robots do and how to gain control over them.

There are three basic types of search engines: crawler-based, human-powered, and a combination of both.

Domain Name Basics: An Introduction

It's amazing how we take things for granted. Take domain names, for instance. Most people know what they are but few understand all of the details involved. These usually do not become evident until a domain name is needed for a Web site.

A domain name is basically a Web site address. For example, "washingtonpost.com" is the address of the Washington Post Web site; it's also the site's domain name.
Note: The entire Web address, i.e., http://www.washingtonpost.com, is known as the URL (Uniform Resource Locator).

There are three "levels" of domain names. The first level, described in detail below, is the "extension" part of the name, i.e. ".com." The second level would be "washingtonpost.com." The third level would be "www.washingtonpost.com."

Using the DOCTYPE Tag

Having trouble with your Web pages? Can't get them to display correctly in your browser? It might be that your page is a little "quirky."

There are several reasons why Web pages do not display properly, such as omitting a required end tag, improperly formatting a table, JavaScript errors, CSS errors, incorrect server requests, etc. Often, these errors happen because Web developers do not take the time to validate their work. In other cases they are a result of a lack of knowledge regarding the proper formatting and coding of Web pages.
